I only use my pve characters now in any pvp area.
But I had to get there first ... before that, which means not optimal equipment, I used pvp-only characters.
Takes times and money to get them geared but I feel much more comfortable with them somehow. And it's fun to get them in gear too, at least for me.
Concerning the shields, 40/40 earth set, furious caster spear etc. I always keep them in storage so I can share them between my casters.
Nothing sweeter for me then winning halls or a GvG the first time with a pve toon ... it adds lore to them which I like, you must not.

I use pvp chars mostly. Because using PvE chars remind me the era when I was a noob wammo that tried to be an inmortal one in AB.
In conclusion, It is a trauma

I use PvE characters, after I get them ready. Any time my role/bar changes I get the needed items/skills for my PvE toon and then use it. I mainly run ranger, flagger, or paragon so my ranger, elly, rit, and paragon all have everything I need at this point and if I need skills I have tomes saved for those classes except ranger and he has all ranger skills unlocked already.

I play my PvE monk in GvG/HA and everything else. Just a matter of preference and not wanting to transfer all those swap weapon/shield sets to any other char back and forth. For all other professions in serius pvp I roll PvP chars. UAX'd 14 moths ago, so I have everything, except the fancy looks - I delete my PvP characters very often so I never spent reward points on any 'red' items for them.
I play other PvE chars occassionally in casual pvp like AB.

The only PvP I really do is AB, and I usually use my PvE monk for that. She was the main character I used to UAS the old-fashioned way, so she can run most builds, and her equipment is all the same as I would make for a PvP monk. However, sometimes I want to try something she isn't optimized for, at which point I fire up a PvP char.

i don't see the problem if the pve char can run the build right with the right equipment.

My warrior has a fellblade, a crystalline sword, an old school dwarven axe, and an old school sephis axe customized, so i really don't see the issue here.

In the beginning it was ONLY pve characters to pvp because armor swapping was too damn important NOT TOO. However, once they removed armor swapping I deleted all but 3 chars(Necro, Monk, Warrior) and replaced them with a PvP character of each profession. My pvp chars all have had minipets. If I need a monk, warrior, or necro then it is a pve character and yes, they have shield sets vs. every damage blah blah. Any other profession though is a pvp character.
In the beginning only the un-informed played with pvp characters because you couldn't armor swap.....oh how times have changed...

All of my pve characters are pvp ready. I only use pvp characters for classes that I didn't make for pve paragon/dervish/ritualist.

I have had my pve toons ready for PvP from back in the day when you could armor swap, so I just kind of kept them updated and ready. No sense in re-rolling a character into a pvp char unless I don't one that isn't already PvP ready.

I think using PvE characters in PvP is usually a case of vanity. Watch observer mode HA and GvG and you'll see loads of people in black FoW, Chaos Gloves, Mo Zing Mask with Tormented weaponry and a Voltaic Spear on the side.

Interestingly my PvE Ele who is PvP "ready" never really sees any use. Male ele casting animations for 1 second spells just look so god damned bad compared to the female ele's animation.

Wrong. you arnt.
I agree with OP. Pvp char's are for pvp. Its faster, simpler, easier to get the build, runes, and items along with multiple shields or offhands needed for whatever you might be against in your matches.
Besides, its more impressive to see a pvp only monk with multiple skill points just from lvling up off experience by killing other players.
edit: Sure if your pve is pvp ready go nuts. But ive found pve retards thinking they are pvp ready with one weapon set and the elite skill missing from the build you want them to run....

I have 2 PvE's that are fully pvp ready. The others don't have full weapon sets, so I feel like a retard pvping with them unless it's just for AB's or something. Aside from a couple of weapons with cross damage types that aren't available with reward points (piercing axe, etc), there's no real reason to stick with the PvE's now, unless you don't get reward points and get tired of PvP'ing with short swords.
